RAPID CITY, S.D. — After a year-long hiatus, Summer Nights officially returned to downtown Rapid City on Thursday evening, bringing live music, food vendors, local businesses, and hundreds of community members together in its new home near Hay Camp Brewing Company at the corner of 6th Street and Kansas City Street.
Leading the entertainment for the season opener was Rapid City musician Brandon Jones, who said the event’s return was about much more than simply taking the stage.
“I think it felt good to be back and be a part of the community getting together,” Jones said. “Obviously, playing a show on that size of stage with that level of production in my hometown is always fun. But when you look out from the stage and see the sense of community, people coming together, and businesses thriving, that’s what really stood out.”
The event marks a new chapter for one of Rapid City’s most beloved summer traditions. Following a year away, Summer Nights has returned in a new downtown location, creating a different atmosphere than attendees may remember from previous years.
Jones said while there were naturally a few adjustments that come with any new venue, the overall experience exceeded his expectations.
“Being on stage and looking out compared to the old location, I thought it was way cooler,” he said. “It felt like there was more space, and people had room to spread out and enjoy themselves.”
One of the biggest differences Jones noticed was the improved sound quality. With shorter surrounding buildings and a different layout, he said the music carried exceptionally well throughout the downtown area.

The new location also offered unique viewing opportunities. From the stage, Jones spotted residents watching from nearby balconies and rooftops, creating a scene that highlighted the event’s connection to the heart of downtown Rapid City.
“There were people on balconies watching the show, people on rooftops, and people spread throughout downtown,” he said. “It was really cool to see.”
Attendance appeared strong throughout the evening, with crowds growing steadily and remaining active until the event wrapped up at 9 p.m.
“It felt like people were genuinely excited that Summer Nights was back,” Jones said.
For Jones, the return of the event serves as a reminder of what community gatherings can accomplish.
“I think our community kind of missed that coming together,” he said. “Everybody just left everything else aside and came downtown to enjoy each other’s company, have fun, and listen to some music.”
The positive impact extended beyond the concert area itself. After finishing his performance, Jones visited several downtown establishments and noticed the increased activity throughout the district.
“The post-party was at Social House, and it was busy,” he said. “Most of the tables were full, people were singing karaoke, the food was great, and the vibes were high. There were people everywhere downtown.”
That economic boost is one of the reasons many community members have long supported Summer Nights. The weekly event not only provides free entertainment but also helps drive foot traffic to restaurants, bars, breweries, and local businesses throughout downtown Rapid City.
With the first night now in the books, Jones believes the season is off to a strong start and expects future events to continue building momentum.
“I believe the rest of these Summer Nights are going to go this way,” he said. “People were excited, and it felt good to have it back.”
Summer Nights takes place every Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the summer in downtown Rapid City next to Hay Camp Brewing Company, featuring live music, food vendors, local businesses, and family-friendly entertainment.
