UPDATE:

STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a 50-year-old Rapid City man led law enforcement on a dangerous high-speed chase down Interstate 90 Friday.

The Highway patrol says preliminary information indicates the driver of a 2019 Toyota Tundra left Love’s Truck Stop in Box Elder after Pennington County dispatch received a call of a theft on the premises.

The Box Elder Police Department located the vehicle traveling east on I-90 and attempted a traffic stop. The driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol joined the pursuit which extended to Highway 14/16 and rural roads before turning west on I-90.

From there, the driver led authorities on a dangerous chase that at times, exceeded 100 mph. Several witnesses told the Rapid City Post the truck was passing motorists on the Interstate on the right, left and even shoulder of the highway.

Radio traffic indicated the driver dodged spike strips at several locations, before reportedly running over one at 32. That didn’t stop the driver though, as witnesses report he continued westbound towards Spearfish, even driving on the wrong side of the Interstate for a short time.

The driver was down to two tires as he raced through Spearfish at speeds of 70-90 mph.

The chase finally ended shortly after crossing into Wyoming, when the vehicle entered a spin and ran off the road. The driver attempted to regain control when a South Dakota Highway Patrol unit pinned the Toyota against a tree. The driver was taken into custody without further incident.

The driver’s name has not been released.

Other agencies involved were the Box Elder Police Department, the Meade County Police Department, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The incident remained under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol Friday evening.
