RAPID CITY, S.D. – A massive fire at a manufactured home dealership in Black Hawk drew a large response from several regional fire departments Tuesday evening, damaging seven structures and triggering an ongoing state investigation.
Emergency crews were dispatched to Centennial Homes at 11910 JB Road, located just off Interstate 90, at approximately 6:19 p.m. upon receiving reports of a structure fire.
According to a press release from Black Hawk Fire Department Deputy Chief Klunder, the first arriving firefighters discovered one manufactured home fully engulfed in flames, with the fire rapidly spreading to multiple nearby structures on the lot. Firefighters faced challenging conditions, battling both high winds and a lack of local fire hydrants.
The absence of hydrants forced fire officials to immediately call in additional resources to support suppression operations. Water tenders and personnel from Piedmont, North Haines, Rapid City, Box Elder, Whispering Pines, Rapid Valley, Doty, Johnson Siding, and Ellsworth Air Force Base all responded to the scene to assist.
Initial crews focused their efforts on exposure protection to keep the heavy black smoke and growing flames from advancing across the commercial property. In total, seven nearby structures sustained damage or ignited during the incident. Officials confirmed that three of those homes suffered significant or moderate damage.
Crews worked for hours to contain the blaze and protect surrounding properties until the incident was finally brought under control. No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. The incident is currently under investigation by the South Dakota Fire Marshal’s office. Klunder stated that due to the ongoing investigation, no further information will be released at this time.
