RAPID CITY, SD—As part of the 150th anniversary observance of Rapid City’s founding, a display table in the lobby of city hall in Rapid City has new offerings centered around the city’s sports history.

Various sports events, players and teams are represented in the display, including the Rapid City Chiefs of the old Basin League and the Rapid City Thrillers of the CBA and IBA.  Memorable sports events such as Rapid City American Legion Post 22’s national title is referenced. Programs from motorcycle racing at Black Hills Speedway and memorable rodeo events from the National High School Rodeo in the mid-1980s are featured as is a flyer promoting the Central States Fair and Black Hills Stock Show from 40 years ago.

Some of Rapid City’s most notable athletes are also profiled in the display including Adam Vinatieri, Mark Ellis, Becky Hammon, Dick Green, John Dutton, Dave Collins, Eric Piatkowski, Olympic gold medalist Randy Lewis and world class pool player Shane Van Boening. There is also reference to the recent national championships of the Black Hills Rapids Soccer Club and to Rapid City’s three appearances in the Little League World Series.

“You can’t fit 150 years of memorable events, teams and players on one display table,” said City Information Officer Darrell Shoemaker. “The display provides the viewing public a glimpse of just some of the great sports moments and players from our history.  There’s a lot to share.

“Rapid City is a great sports community, for fans and athletes. Perhaps the display will bring back memories of participating in high school, youth or recreational sports and activities; or of those great Thrillers teams, of taking in Basin League games at Fitzgerald Stadium.”

The display table also shares photos of teams and community competitions from the early 1900s.  Various displays of items, including old photos and artifacts from the City’s past, have been showcased in the City Hall lobby since the beginning of the year.
