Rapid City, SD – Sunday is the start of Daylight Savings. The annual shift occurs at 2am Sunday, March 8th, when clocks officially move forward one hour. Daylight saving time will remain in effect until Sunday, Nov ember 1st when clocks will fall back one hour to standard time.

Under the Uniform Time Act of 1966, daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday of March and concludes on the first Sunday of November. While some states like Arizona and Hawaii do not observe the time change, South Dakota continues to participate in the biannual ritual.

Recent efforts in the South Dakota Legislature to move the state to permanent standard time have failed to gain traction. In 2025, a proposal to eliminate the time change was rejected by a legislative committee. Proponents of such changes often cite health and safety concerns related to sleep disruption, while opponents, including some in the agricultural and tourism sectors, argue that the current system benefits South Dakota businesses and residents.
