RAPID CITY, S.D. — Dinosaur Park’s iconic “Dino” will be illuminated in red, white and blue beginning Wednesday night as Rapid City kicks off its Real America Birthday Bash celebration honoring the nation’s 250th birthday.
The patriotic lighting will continue through Sunday, coinciding with the five-day community celebration. Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said the display is a fitting tribute for one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. “As we gather to observe and celebrate America’s 250th birthday, it’s only fitting that one of Rapid City’s most iconic symbols is lit up in patriotic colors,” Salamun said, adding that it will be exciting to see Dino glowing atop Dinosaur Hill throughout the week of festivities.
Dino is periodically illuminated in different colors to recognize special events, activities and community designations with approval from the mayor.
The Real America Birthday Bash will be held Wednesday through Sunday with events taking place throughout downtown Rapid City and Memorial Park. The celebration includes a community parade, patriotic drone show, downtown festival, Mount Rushmore fireworks viewing party, performances by Chancey Williams and Brandon Jones, a concert by the Air Force Academy Band, a Kids’ Zone, the city’s fireworks display, Touch-A-Truck exhibits, local and regional musical performances, food vendors, historical re-enactors, live historical readings and the Freedom 5K Run.
