BOX ELDER, S.D. – Douglas High School, located near Rapid City, has forfeited its upcoming varsity football game at Yankton scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, school officials announced.
In a letter sent to families and community members, school leaders said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution due to significant roster limitations caused by ongoing player injuries.
“The safety and well-being of our student-athletes is always our top priority,” the letter stated. “Fielding a team under our current health and roster constraints would put our student-athletes at an unacceptable risk of harm”.
Douglas High School administration acknowledged the frustration the cancellation creates for fans and student-athletes across the greater Rapid City area, but emphasized that player welfare remains the foremost concern.
“While we share in the disappointment this brings to our players, families, and supporters, prioritizing our athletes’ long-term health and recovery must come first,” the statement said.
The announcement was signed by Douglas High School Activities Director Josh Haaland and Principal Beau Voegeli.
