RAPID CITY, S.D. – Due to drought conditions, the popular Hydrant Parties hosted by the Rapid City Parks and Recreation Department have been cancelled this summer.
Two hydrant parties were scheduled for June 17 at Sioux Park and July 8 at College Park. The events traditionally include fire department personnel spraying water on participants from fire hoses, as well as participation from the Rapid City Police Department, Rapid City Public Library, and Solid Waste Division.
“The fire hydrant parties are very popular and the kids and families love them, but under the circumstances, due to the severe drought conditions and water restrictions, we need to cancel this summer’s events,” said City Parks and Recreation Specialist Lindsey Myers.
Myers encourages families to participate in a number of alternative special events planned at the Rapid City pools this summer, including the Splish Splash Summer Bash on June 17 and July 8, 2026. Details are available on the Rapid City Parks and Recreation Facebook page.
