FAIRBURN, S.D. – Governor Larry Rhoden has declared a state of emergency for portions of southwest South Dakota as crews battle a fast-moving wildfire south of Rapid City.

The 79 Fire was first reported around 11 a.m. MDT on Saturday. The blaze is located just east of Highway 79 along East French Creek Road in eastern Custer County. Officials estimate the fire has burned approximately 5,000 acres.

“Keeping South Dakotans safe is my number one priority, and this emergency declaration will provide the resources firefighters need to get control of this fire,” Rhoden said. “I’m grateful for their dedication and bravery in keeping everyone safe.”

The governor’s declaration allows fire suppression costs to be covered by the state fire suppression fund in accordance with state law. The move ensures that local agencies have the financial backing to sustain a long-term response if necessary.

Numerous federal, state, and local firefighting assets, including aircraft, are currently working to suppress the flames. While the fire grew quickly throughout the afternoon, officials reported that firefighters are making progress on controlling the perimeter.

Crews are expected to remain on the scene overnight and into the coming days to manage hot spots and strengthen containment lines. Residents in the Rapid City area and throughout Custer County are encouraged to monitor official channels for updates.
