RAPID CITY, S.D. – Persistent severe fire weather and extended drought conditions have prompted officials to enact Stage 2 fire restrictions across the Black Hills National Forest starting Monday, July 27.

The order applies to all national forest lands across South Dakota and Wyoming, including developed campgrounds and recreation sites in the hills surrounding Rapid City.

Under Stage 2 restrictions, open fires, campfires, charcoal barbecues, and grills are strictly prohibited. The only exception is for devices solely fueled by liquid or gas that can be turned on and off in an area cleared of flammable material within 3 feet. Outdoor smoking is also banned, except within enclosed vehicles or buildings.

Other prohibited activities include welding or operating acetylene torches with open flames, possessing or using explosives, and driving motorized vehicles off established roads and trails. Off-road parking is restricted to cleared areas devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the road.

Recreationists near Rapid City may still use liquid or gas-fueled stoves, grills, and lanterns that meet manufacturer safety specifications. Motorized travel remains permitted on established Forest Service roads and trails, while hiking, biking, and walking remain open across the forest.

Forest Service officials implemented the restrictions to protect public safety and natural resources as wildfire danger escalates. Violations are punishable by fines up to $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, as well as possible imprisonment for up to six months.

Safety guidelines advise motorists to secure tow chains, check tire pressure, and maintain brakes before travel to prevent accidental sparks. Any fire sightings should be reported immediately by calling 911.
