RAPID CITY, S.D. – National qualifier Mazie Moberly has announced her verbal commitment to swim for the University of Tampa for the 2027-28 season and beyond.
Moberly, who specializes in distance freestyle and open water competitions, spent part of her career in Rapid City swimming with Rushmore Tsunami before moving to Florida three years ago. She marks the first 2027 commitment for the University of Tampa program.
“Since I started swimming, it’s been a dream of mine to go to one of the best distance schools in the country. I’m blessed to say my dream has come true,” Moberly said. “I’m extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Tampa! First, I’d like to thank the Lord for all his glory and allowing me to excel at my sport. I’d like to thank my parents for supporting me through this entire process. I’d also like to thank Coach John Hulvey for believing in me, pushing me, and coaching me into a better swimmer and person. I’d like to thank my friends and teammates who have made practice even more fun. Finally, I’d like to thank Coach Kiner and the rest of the University of Tampa coaching staff for giving me this incredible opportunity. I’m excited for the next 5 years! Go Spartans!”
A senior at Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Florida, Moberly currently trains year-round with the Gator Swim Club. Prior to her move to Florida, she competed with the GREAT Swim Team and Rushmore Tsunami in Rapid City.
The University of Tampa finished second in the NCAA Division II National Championships last spring and took first in the Sunshine State Conference. Moberly’s top times in the 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle, and 1650 freestyle would have ranked her in the top three on Tampa’s roster last season.
Last fall, Moberly placed 12th in the 500 freestyle at the FHSAA 4A State Championships. She competed at the Open Water Nationals last April, placing eighth in the 5K and 12th in the 10K in her age group.
During her summer long course season, Moberly took fifth place in the 800 freestyle and sixth place in the 1500 freestyle at Speedo Sectionals-Ocala in June. She followed that performance by placing third in both the 800 freestyle and 1500 freestyle at the Florida Senior Champs in July. She rounded out her season at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in Knoxville in July, where she placed ninth in the 1500 freestyle and 11th in the 800 freestyle.
Her best times include:
- 1000 freestyle (SCY)- 10:07.87
- 1650 freestyle (SCY)- 16:55.96
- 500 freestyle (SCY)- 4:57.81
- 800 freestyle (LCM)- 9:08.69
