RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Fire Department has confirmed that the closure of the North bound lane of Mount Rushmore Road Sunday morning is the result of a brake fire on a fuel semi-truck.

The incident, which initially drew a large response from emergency crews, led to the temporary shutdown of lanes leading into Rapid City. Fire officials stated that the truck is currently being unloaded of its fuel into another semi-fuel tanker as a safety precaution.

The Rapid City Fire Department expects the northbound lanes to reopen to traffic in a couple of hours.

Motorists are encouraged to continue using alternate routes until the scene is cleared and the fuel transfer is complete.
