South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden has officially proclaimed May as Military Appreciation Month in partnership with the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs.

The proclamation recognizes the service and sacrifice of current and former members of the United States Armed Forces, along with their families. State officials say the month serves as a time for South Dakotans to honor veterans, active duty military personnel, military spouses and Gold Star families.

Military Appreciation Month includes several national observances throughout May, including Loyalty Day on May 1, Victory in Europe Day and Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 8, Armed Forces Day on May 16 and Memorial Day on May 25.

May is also recognized as Gold Star Awareness Month, which honors the families of military members who died while serving the nation.

“This month isn’t just about remembrance, it’s about connection,” said Jeremiah Schneider. “Across South Dakota, we can all take part in honoring the military community, whether by thanking a veteran, supporting a military spouse, or extending comfort to a Gold Star family. Each small act of gratitude carries great meaning.”

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs is encouraging residents, organizations and local communities to participate in observances throughout the month, display the American flag and find meaningful ways to thank those who have served or continue to serve in the military.

According to state officials, the proclamation highlights the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made not only by service members but also by the families who support them.
