RAPID CITY, S.D. – A grassfire broke out just before 2 p.m. Sunday near Potato Butte along Highway 79 south of Rapid City, prompting a multi-agency response that resulted in a quick knockdown, according to fire officials.

Rockerville Fire Department units responded alongside mutual aid partners from Battle Creek Fire, Rapid City Fire, Rapid Valley Fire and State Wildland Fire. Crews were able to contain the blaze after the fire checked against a two-track road, limiting its spread. The fire burned just over 10 acres before resources gained the upper hand.

Fire personnel remained on scene to monitor the area but were expected to be released shortly after the incident was reported under control.

Officials are urging Rapid City area residents to use caution with all ignition sources in the coming days, warning that critical fire weather conditions are forecast for next week.
