RAPID CITY, S.D. – The highway patrol has identified two people from Emden, Illinois who died Thursday in a three-vehicle crash near Hill City, South Dakota.

Preliminary crash information indicates Kurt D. Klokkenga, the driver of a 1953 Harley-Davidson, and Kendall D. Klokkenga, the driver of a 1956 Harley-Davidson FLE 74CI, were traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 385 at mile marker 89.

At the same time, Ann Mischell, the driver of a 2011 Toyota 4Runner, was in the northbound lanes, waiting for oncoming traffic to pass so she could turn onto Wrinkle Valley Road.  A fourth vehicle was between the Toyota and the Harley-Davidsons. That vehicle passed the Toyota on the shoulder.

The Harley-Davidsons attempted to stop and their brakes locked. Kendall laid his vehicle onto the road. Kurt’s Harley-Davidson collided with the Toyota and caught fire, which spread to the Toyota.

Kurt and Regina Klokkenga sustained fatal injuries. Kendall was transported to a Rapid City hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries. Ann and her passenger were not injured.
