RAPID CITY, SD— City of Rapid City officials are cautioning residents to verify information generated by artificial intelligence after an inaccurate AI response was identified regarding City programs and policies.
The most recent example incorrectly states that Rapid City offers a program to reimburse property owners for sidewalk and curb repairs. The information found on Google relies on a Facebook AI answer which confuses programs in Rapid City with those offered in Ohio and Indiana.
“As more people use AI-generated search results to find information, we want residents to be aware that those responses are not always accurate,” said Shannon Truax, Public Works Administration Operations Manager. Truax cautioned citizens to verify information they find online. “We had similar misinformation shared recently related to recycling pickup schedules. Residents seeking information about City programs, services or requirements are encouraged to use the City of Rapid City’s official website or contact the appropriate City department rather than relying solely on AI-generated search summaries.
In this instance, portions of the AI response are accurate. However, the AI response incorrectly combines local requirements with reimbursement programs from other communities in other states. Rapid City property owners are responsible for maintaining sidewalks adjacent to their property, including the cost of necessary repairs. Property owners are also required to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice within 24 hours following a snow event.
The Rapid City Code Enforcement Division fields many complaints each year from citizens regarding concerns with code violations and lack of sidewalk maintenance. If sidewalks are not maintained, or cleared of safety hazards like snow and ice, within the designated timeframe, Code Enforcement can arrange to have the issue remediated, and bill the cost of that service to the property owner.
