RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City police are investigating an early morning shooting that occurred Saturday after a homeowner confronted an intruder attempting to force entry into a residence.
Officers were dispatched at approximately 3:25 a.m. Feb. 28 to the 600 block of Saint James Street following a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, police located a male suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening.
During the initial investigation, police interviewed the resident who reported being awoken by loud noises. The resident told officers a male was actively attempting to force his way through a window of the home. In response to the attempted entry, the resident shot the intruder.
Investigators later spoke with the injured male and determined that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. According to police, the man had mistaken the Saint James Street residence for the home of an acquaintance living next door.
The Rapid City Police Department stated that the incident currently appears to be a case of justified home defense. Criminal charges against the intruder are pending as the investigation continues.
