Mountain Goat Spearfish Canyon

SPEARFISH, S.D. – South Dakota wildlife officials are investigating a recent case of illegal scavenging in Spearfish Canyon. On April 8, a deceased mountain goat was discovered at the base of Bridal Veil Falls. However, by the time South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GF&P) staff reached the site, the animal’s head and a large portion of its neck had been removed and taken from the scene.

Under South Dakota Codified Law, it is a Class 1 misdemeanor to unlawfully possess or transport any part of a big game animal. This prohibition remains in effect even if the animal died of natural causes or accidental circumstances. Because mountain goats are classified as big game, the removal of the head constitutes a significant legal violation.

While the exact cause of death is difficult to determine, biologists suggest the male goat likely died after falling from the surrounding cliffs or being struck by a vehicle. Local observers noted that without the horns and teeth, it is impossible to accurately determine the age of the animal through standard wear-and-tear examination. Although mountain goats are highly adapted to the vertical terrain of the canyon—utilizing specialized hooves with soft, high-traction pads—falls are a known occurrence within the herd.

The presence of mountain goats in the Black Hills dates back to 1924, when a small group imported from Canada escaped a zoo in Custer State Park. The specific population inhabiting Spearfish Canyon is more recent, tracing back to a single pregnant female that migrated from the Needles Highway in 2013. In the years since, the herd has expanded significantly, now ranging from the Community Caves area to the cliffs above Savoy.

The GF&P is seeking information regarding the person or persons responsible for removing the goat’s remains. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the Turn In Poachers (TIPs) hotline 1-888-OVERBAG (1-888-683-7224) or by contacting local wildlife conservation officers directly. Cash rewards are available for information that leads to a successful prosecution.
