To remember Jerry William Chapman is to remember a smile, a laugh shared with him, and the feeling of being heard. He was known for smiling and laughing with everyone, but he also knew when to listen. He wanted to have a good time, and his easygoing enjoyment of life was part of what made him so memorable to those who knew him.

Jerry, 53, of Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away on October 7, 2026. Born on February 14, 1973, he was the son of Jane Chapman and Earnest Washington.

For 30 years, Jerry worked in food service, dedicating three decades of his life to an industry centered on serving others. Away from work, he enjoyed fishing, cars, and football. As a Colts fan, following his team was among the pleasures that helped make life his own.

What stands out most in his family’s remembrance, however, is the way Jerry was with people. His smile and laughter were familiar to everyone around him, and he took time to listen to what others had to say. He gave his attention as readily as he shared his humor, finding enjoyment in the company of others. Those everyday exchanges, a conversation, a smile, a moment of laughter—now become treasured reminders of him.

Jerry is survived by his children, Gracie Chapman and Mercer Chapman; and his siblings, Karen Young and Michael and Cora Chapman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jaimie Lynnette Rivers; his parents, Jane Chapman and Earnest Washington, and his sister, Melody Chapman.

In accordance with Jerry’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Jerry leaves those who knew him with memories that are simple and deeply personal: his enthusiasm for the things he enjoyed, a laugh in any situation, and the smile that so often accompanied him. For his loved ones, remembering Jerry will always mean remembering the pleasure he found in a good time together, the warmth of his company, and the sound of his laughter.
