RAPID CITY, S.D. – The trunk of the Rapid City Police Department’s 1967 Plymouth was filling with school supplies Wednesday afternoon at the northside Wal Mart as two members of the Rapid City Police Department Community Engagement Team accepted donations for the annual school supply drive.

This is the fifth year the “Fill the Patrol Car with School Supplies” has taken place in Rapid City at both Wal Mart locations.

The school supply drive is a joint effort between police and Cody Two Bulls. Two Bulls started the ‘Backpacks and Baseball’ school supply drive while he was a student at Central High School. Now, a graduate of Mahpiya Luta High School, Two Bulls is continuing his efforts to ensure local students are properly equipped as they head back to the classrooms.

“We work with high-risk youth and a lot of the families we work with have a need,” said Trish Collins, Rapid City Police Department Community Engagement Team. “So, part of the partnership with Cody Two Bulls is that Cody can get supplies for his communities in need in Pine Ridge and we can get supplies for the families we work with here in Rapid City.”

The Rapid City Police Department’s Community Engagement Team is made up of about seven members. The team addresses different needs from working on intervention/prevention efforts in high crime neighborhoods and working with high-risk youth.

On Wednesday, the team’s focus was on school supplies, and it was going well.

“I think it’s pretty positive,” Collins said. “Being able to visit with people prior to start of school is really positive. …And being able to help Cody is really impactful.”
