RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City officials are reminding the public of upcoming city government office closures and service adjustments for the Independence Day holiday week.
City offices, including City Hall, will be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of the federal holiday. Because Independence Day falls on a Saturday, federal law designates the preceding Friday as the observed holiday.
The holiday schedule will affect several Rapid City operations and services on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4.
The Rapid City Landfill will remain open on Friday but will close on Saturday. Trash collection for the week will be adjusted, with Monday collections running on a normal schedule, while Tuesday through Friday collections will be picked up one day early. Officials advise residents to leave trash out until it is collected.
Public transportation will also be impacted. Rapid Transit Service operations, including RapidRide and Dial-A-Ride, will not operate on Friday or Saturday. Full transit operations will resume on Monday, July 6.
The Rapid City Public Library will close for both Friday and Saturday.
Administrative offices at The Monument will close on Friday and remain closed through the weekend since no events are scheduled. Tickets for upcoming events can still be purchased online.
For residents looking to stay cool, the city’s outdoor pools will open from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. However, the Roosevelt Park Ice Arena will close from July 4 through July 19 for annual maintenance.
Emergency services will not be interrupted. While administrative offices for the Rapid City Police Department, Fire Department and Rapid City Regional Airport will close on Friday, police and fire shift services will remain on duty to support the community. The Rapid City Regional Airport will also remain open for flights.
The scheduling changes coincide with the Rapid City Real America 250 Birthday Bash Festival, which runs from July 1 through July 5. The festival features a community parade, a patriotic drone show, a downtown festival, a Mount Rushmore fireworks viewing party, a Kids’ Zone and a Freedom 5K Run. Musical performances will include Chancey Williams, Brandon Jones and the Air Force Academy Band.
The centerpiece of the celebration, the city’s annual fireworks show, is scheduled to launch from the Executive Golf Course on July 4 at approximately 9:30 p.m.
