Very little growth reported on Lookout Fire lines

September 9, 2026
SPEARFISH, S.D. – There was very little to no growth on the Lookout Fire at Spearfish Tuesday, although there is still no listed containment on the blaze which began Monday afternoon. The fire has burned 444 acres of grass and timber along the rolling hills of Lookout Mountain. Fire officials say aerial resources played a key role Monday providing the opportunity Tuesday for ground resources to continue establishing and securing the perimeter. Investigators say the fire’s cause was burning hay bales that were left in the ditch from a previous incident on Sunday. Fire behavior decreased significantly Tuesday, remaining within its current footprint but with forecast weather conditions and dry fuels the potential remains for growth. Forward progress has been stopped on the north side of the fire as work continues on the flanks and south side. As of 7 pm last night, residents of Lookout Mountain, Kerwin Rd., Lookout Vista Rd, and surrounding areas were permitted to return home. Those areas will remain closed to non-residents.
