RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol has reported two more fatalities from crashes that occurred on Thursday. The patrol says the two people killed in the three-vehicle crash were a 69-year-old male and a 69-year-old female from Emden, Illinois. Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 1953 Harley Davidson and the driver of a 1956 Harley Davidson FLE 74CI were traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 385 at mile marker 89. At the same time the driver of a 2011 Toyota 4Runner was in the northbound lanes, waiting for oncoming traffic to pass so she could turn onto Wrinkle Valley Road. A fourth vehicle was between the Toyota and the Harley Davidsons. That vehicle passed the Toyota on the shoulder. The Harley Davidsons attempted to stop and their brakes locked. The driver of the 1956 Harley Davidson laid his vehicle onto the road. The 1953 Harley Davidson collided with the Toyota and caught fire, which spread to the Toyota. The driver and the passenger of the 1953 Harley Davidson sustained fatal injuries. The 72-year-old driver of the 1956 Harley Davidson from Glendale, Arizona, was transported to a Rapid City hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver and passenger of the Toyota were not injured. Names of the those involved have not been released pending notification of family members. U.S. Highway 385 was closed for approximately four hours. The investigation is ongoing. Share via: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn More
