RAPID CITY, S.D. — An armed carjacking suspect was arrested Friday (July 3, 2026) morning after a police pursuit through Rapid City and a subsequent standoff, according to the Pennington County Sheriff’s office. At around 9:45 a.m. Friday, authorities say 27-year-old Lyric Hill allegedly stole someone’s vehicle at gunpoint near West Flormann Street and Central Boulevard. The sheriff’s office says they later found the stolen vehicle and attempted to pull it over. Officials say Hill did not stop and led deputies on a pursuit. When Hill’s vehicle was stopped with spike strips, he allegedly fled on foot armed with a handgun. Officials said Hill ran into a nearby field. Negotiators were brought in as law enforcement closed in, and Hill eventually surrendered. The sheriff’s office described the incident as especially dangerous because law enforcement resources were already stretched thin during with is considered the busiest time of the year due to the July 4th holiday. The Sheriff’s Office says Hill was peacefully taken into custody hours later. According to the Department of Corrections website, Hill is on active parole and has been convicted of child abuse and aggravated eluding.
