STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade 46-1 School Board met for their September meeting Monday night with the preliminary fall enrollment numbers on the agenda. The district reports the unofficial fall enrollment is 2,897 students, which is down 41 from the 2025 number of 2,947. The official fall enrollment count is taken as of the last Friday in September. Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt says he expects those numbers to drop some more. He says the district budgeted for 2,875 students. The board last night also got an update on a four-day school week discussion. A committee set up to look into a proposed four-day school week for the district reviewed the latest parent survey results, prepared draft four-day calendars for upcoming school years, and discussed in small groups potential questions to include in a second parent survey. The Committee has confirmed dates, locations, and times for Public Presentations. They will be held at the Stagebarn Middle School Gymnasium: October 14, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. SWMS Grunwald Gymnasium: October 19, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. And, the board also got an update on a meeting with New Underwood and Wall on a request by the rural schools to join either of the schools. The committee discussed several areas, including process and timelines, valuation and revenue based on guidelines set by the Department of Revenue and other questions. If the rural schools were to join either Wall or New Underwood, boards would need to initiate action of a petition signed by 15% of registered voters in Meade 46-1 from the last general election, or there would need to be voter approval from current Meade 46-1 school district registered voters. The rural schools had reached out to Faith about joining their district, but the Faith Board decided in July not to pursue the reorganization. Share via: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn More
