Bear sighted at mouth of Boulder Canyon

September 2, 2026
STURGIS, S.D. – Some local Sturgis residents reported seeing a bear at the mouth of Boulder Canyon and some footage of the animal is making the rounds on Facebook. Isaiah Cole captured footage of the bear right off the to the side of U.S. Highway 14A. Meade County Town Hall shared the image on their Facebook page Tuesday. The sighting in Sturgis follows sightings of a black bear in the Spearfish area. Back in June, a young male black bear was spotted near Spearfish Canyon Lodge after getting into unsecured garbage near a shed. The incident led to temporary trail closures in both directions while South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks officers responded. Black bears have also been captured on home security cameras wandering through neighborhoods like Spearfish’s Sandstone neighborhood. Additional sightings have been reported nearby on the outskirts of Lead. Share via: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn More
