August 20, 2026
STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Sheriff’s Office says they are investigating an incident that occurred at the Buffalo Chip Campground during this year’s Motorcycle Rally, although details on the incident weren’t released. In a release Thursday, the sheriff’s office said on August 15, they were made aware of an incident involving security personnel and several patrons at the Buffalo Chip Campground during an evening concert. Since that time, the Sheriff’s Office says they have received and reviewed numerous social media posts, videos, photographs, and other information related to this incident. Additional information regarding other alleged incidents at the campground have also been forwarded to their office for review. As part of the ongoing investigation, Meade County Sheriff’s Office investigators have identified the security personnel involved in the incident and are continuing to gather and review evidence and information from those involved and other witnesses. The Meade County Sheriff’s Office says they are aware of the significant public interest surrounding this incident and the considerable amount of information and commentary circulating on social media. In their release, the sheriff’s office stated “we want to assure the public we take these allegations seriously.” The release went on to say: At the same time, our responsibility is to conduct a thorough, comprehensive, and impartial investigation based upon the facts and available evidence. Social media can provide valuable information and evidence, but conclusions regarding criminal conduct must be based upon a complete investigation and the applicable law. We ask for the public’s patience while investigators continue reviewing the information and evidence associated with this matter. Because this remains an active and ongoing investigation, the Meade County Sheriff’s Office will not provide additional details or comment on specific allegations at this time. Additional information will be released when appropriate and when doing so will not compromise the integrity of the investigation. Anyone who may have firsthand information, photographs, or video related to this incident and has not already provided that information to law enforcement is encouraged to contact the Meade County Sheriff’s Office .
