Kevin Lee Kempe, of Black Hawk, South Dakota, passed away on September 15, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on July 6, 1955, Kevin lived a life defined by hard work, adventure, strong convictions, and an unwavering love for the people and experiences that mattered most to him.

Kevin built a varied career working with his hands and developing skills in several demanding trades. His career included construction, welding, and working as a Peterbilt semi technician. He was someone who knew the value of hard work and wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. His practical skills and determination were an important part of who he was.

When Kevin wasn’t working, he loved being outdoors and making the most of life. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and trapping, as well as riding his Harley and going 4-wheeling. He also enjoyed gambling and, perhaps most importantly, spending time partying and making memories with his friends and family.

Kevin was known for being honest, caring, kind, compassionate, and forgiving. He was never afraid to say it like it was and remained true to what he believed in. He marched to the beat of his own drum and lived according to his own convictions.

He also had a deeply caring side that showed itself in the things he reminded his loved ones to hold onto. Kevin would always remind those around him to say their prayers and be thankful—a simple message that reflected the values he carried with him and wanted others to remember.

Kevin’s family was at the heart of his life. He is survived by his wife, Becky Kempe (Albrecht); his daughter, Chanda Mutschelknaus (Jesse) of Piedmont, South Dakota; his son, Joshua Kempe (Megan Pataski) of Black Hawk, South Dakota; and his beloved fur babies, Prince and Bella.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jazlyn Kempe, Jayla Romero, and Evaline Mutschelknaus. Kevin leaves behind many other relatives, friends, and loved ones who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents Roland Kempe and Gladys Kempe. Siblings Danny Kempe, Merrilyn Burchell, and Susan Genzler.

Kevin will be remembered for his straightforward honesty, generous heart, strong spirit, and unmistakable individuality. He lived life in his own way, stayed true to what he believed, and never tried to be anyone other than himself. From the outdoors to the open road, from hard work to good times with friends and family, Kevin knew how to make the most of the life he was given.

His family and friends will miss his stories, his honesty, his kindness, and the unique presence that made Kevin who he was. Though he is no longer with them, the lessons he shared, the memories he created, and the love he gave will remain with those who knew him.
