RAPID CITY, S.D. — A little basketball experience and a lot of confidence paid off for Laura Brewer on Friday when she won $1,000 in Quality Auto of the Black Hills’ free throw shootout.

Brewer was one of five contestants selected to compete in the weekly shootout at Quality Auto’s new location at 1415 East Highway 44 in Rapid City. She was also the only woman competing and came out on top against four men to claim the $1,000 cash prize.

Brewer admitted she had some nerves leading up to the competition. “I couldn’t sleep all night, but I knew I could do it,” she said after winning.

Basketball was not new territory for Brewer. She said she started playing when she was about 5 years old and played throughout high school. She stepped away from the game after having children and said it had been about 10 years since she played regularly. The years away did not stop her Friday, and after the win Brewer said, “I’m so proud of myself.”

Being the only woman in the competition did not bother her either. Brewer said she is used to playing against her boyfriend and was not intimidated by the four men competing alongside her. With one shootout remaining in the promotion, Brewer had some advice for another woman who might find herself in the same position next week: “If there’s other guys and you’re the only girl, don’t be intimidated. Believe in yourself and you can do it.”

The shootout is part of Quality Auto’s celebration of its new East Highway 44 location. Customers and noncustomers can enter the weekly drawing in person at the dealership Monday through Thursday. No vehicle purchase is required. Entrants are also asked to follow Quality Auto on Facebook, where the dealership holds a Facebook Live drawing at noon Thursday to select five contestants.

Those selected return to the dealership at noon Friday to compete in the free throw shootout for a chance to win $1,000.

The final shootout in the series is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 28.
