Laurie Jean Carlson passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, in Custer, South Dakota. She was 82 years old.

Laurie was born on May 22, 1944. Throughout her life, she balanced her deep love for her family with a strong, entrepreneurial spirit. She spent many years dedicated to her family as a stay-at-home mom, pouring her heart into raising her children.

Later in life, she channeled her drive into the professional world as a small business owner, successfully founding and running her own real estate company.

Outside of her career, Laurie possessed a vibrant array of passions. From an early age, she fell in love with horses and spent her youth showing them. Her deep affection for animals continued throughout her entire life, and she loved her dogs immensely.

When taking time to relax, she was an avid fan of movies and always kept a keen, passionate eye on politics.

Laurie was an unforgettable woman who was very dear to many people.. She will be remembered most for her beautifully complex personality; she was incredibly kind, delightfully stubborn, and possessed a fiercely compassionate heart that naturally loved and protected the ones who were hurt the most.

She is survived by her loving children, Julie Atkinson, Ryan Carlson, and Andy Carlson. Her legacy also lives on through her cherished grandson and two granddaughters.

Laurie’s life was a testament to strength, independent grace, and a deep devotion to both her family and the things she cared about most. She will be profoundly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Upon her request cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date.
