SPEARFISH, S.D. – Flames flickered making an eerie glow on the hills making up Lookout Mountain overnight as fire crews remained on the lines of the Lookout Fire at Spearfish.
The fire, first reported just after 3:00 p.m. Monday, is at 443 acres according to fire officials today.
A map of the fire this morning shows its perimeter, which is right up to I-90 and northeast over the ridge.
Monday night, crews were able to stop the fire’s northward progress, but worked on shoring up fire lines on the south flank overnight.
Fire lines held steady overnight with no significant growth. There is still no containment on the fire.
Objectives today include keeping the fire in its current footprint thereby lessening threat to the line. Specific objectives include keeping the fire south of Kerwin Lane, North of Lookout Peak, East of Interstate 90 and west of Lookout Mountain Lane.
Although evacuation notices went out to several homes yesterday, there are no mandatory evacuations in place. Voluntary evacuations remain in place for some residences in the vicinity of the fire.
Traffic is limited to one lane on I-90 northbound between mile markers 10 and 12, where the fire burned right up to the freeway. Road closures include Kerwin Lane the Highway 85 intersection, Kerwin Lane and Lookout Rd and Lookout Mountain Rd and Airport Rd.
Aircraft has played a pivotal role in battling the fire making water drops on the interior of the fire and dropping retardant ahead of the fire.
The fire did not reach Lookout Mountain Park to the south, but did burn over several hiking trails in the area.
The cause of the fire has not been released, although there were reports of hay bales dumped from a truck on Sunday that had caught fire.
Those same hay bales reportedly re-kindled and caught fire again this morning.
