STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis was the finish line for Mai Richards.

The long-distance runner completed a 450 mile journey across the state of South Dakota Monday as part of her “Miles of Honor” effort.

Mai carried the American flag from Sioux Falls to Sturgis, while honoring service member and veterans along the way.

She arrived in Sturgis Monday afternoon, completing her journey to a welcome crowd at Harley Davidson Rally Point.

Mai stated “From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who has supported, encouraged, donated, shared stories, prayed, honked, waved, walked beside me, ran beside me, and helped carry these miles forward. This journey could not have been possible without you.”

She went on to say “over these past 450 miles, every single one of you along this journey has allowed me to be head and heart strong. I could not have done this without you. Thank you for trusting me with your hearts and allowing me to help memorialize those you love who never made it home. And thank you for taking care of mine along the way.”

Mai was guided to Rally Point by the Sturgis Post 33 American Legion Riders and the Sturgis Police Department.

Her welcome ceremony included a moment of silence for fallen heroes, a 21-gun salute and playing of TAPS.
