Update at 3:25pm on June 8th – Another Mountain siting was spotted at 6pm on June 6th.
RAPID CITY, S.D. – A peaceful afternoon in a Rapid City neighborhood quickly escalated Saturday when a “massive” mountain lion ran within feet of a mother and her infant child, drawing a heavy police response.
The incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. on Tanager Drive, located in the Countryside neighborhood of Rapid City. Paige Wilson was nursing her 4-month-old baby on her porch while sitting with a friend when the mountain lion suddenly ran about “10 feet in front of her.”
Wilson quickly alerted her husband, Andrew, and the family ran inside the house. The family immediately called 911, and two police vehicles arrived at the scene within 15 minutes.
Andrew Wilson reported that when the officers arrived, they approached the property crouched with their guns out. Officers notified the Wilsons that the “massive” mountain lion had entered their garage and was standing near their truck. Law enforcement advised the family that they were planning to shoot the lion.
Before officers could take action, the mountain lion quickly exited the garage. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks officials along with local police have been alerted and are monitoring the situation.
