SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – An officer shot during Friday night’s shooting in southwest Sioux Falls has passed away, according to the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office.

Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Deputy Katherine Ann Frank died Monday, Oct. 12, three days after she was shot in the line of duty. She was 26 years old.

Katherine Frank worked at the South Dakota State Penitentiary from September 2022 until being hired by the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office in June 2024.

According to a GoFundMe set up by the Minnehaha County Deputies Association, Katherine leaves behind five siblings, her grandparents, her boyfriend, and parents. Her family describes her as ‘incredibly funny’ and ‘someone who gets along with just about everybody’.

“She was deeply loved, and her loss is felt by so many,” the GoFundMe reads.

A memorial has been established at the Law Enforcement Center on 320 W. 4th Street in Sioux Falls for those who wish to pay their respects.

Tributes have already begun to pour in for the fallen deputy, including a memorial outside of the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office.

“Deputy Frank served with dignity and heart. Her service made a meaningful difference, and her impact will remain with us always,” Sheriff Mike Milstead said in a statement to Dakota News Now.

A man involved in the shooting, 39-year-old Brandon Oetken, faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

All donations sent to the GoFundMe will be collected and sent to Katherine Frank’s family.
