CUSTER, S.D. – Cooler weather and possible snow should help firefighters on the lines of the Qury Fire south of Custer today.
According to officials, it remained at an estimated 7,000 acres this morning and is still 0% contained.
Night operations were successful with point protection and continued mop-up operations from burnout operations being conducted.
The Type 3 Incident Management Team overseeing the fire says burnout operations will continue today as weather allows.
They say incoming potential snow with higher humidity will help reduce fire severity.
Friday, the fire was most active on the southwest portion.
Evacuation orders remained in place overnight and into this morning and several roads within the area of the fire also remained closed. The Living Outreach Center on U.S. Highway 385 served as a shelter for displaced residents and collecting donations across Custer County.
Fire officials say they have an infrared flight scheduled for today which will bring more accurate mapping of the fire.
In response to the fire, the Custer County Commission Friday issued a county-wide burn ban.
