WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Association for the Transformation of Adult Education (NAFTAE) recognizes South Dakota Representative Nicole Uhre-Balk for exceptional support of adult education during national Adult Education and Family Literacy (AEFL) Week, taking place September 13–19, 2026.
“NAFTAE is proud to recognize Representative Uhre-Balk, recipient of the Friend of Adult Learners Award, for outstanding leadership and steadfast support of adult education. This recognition honors lawmakers who demonstrate a strong commitment to ensuring adult learners have access to the education, skills, and opportunities they need to succeed—and recognizes adult education as essential to a strong workforce and America’s future,” said Erin Vobornik, Executive Director of NAFTAE.
Uhre-Balk has demonstrated strong commitment to adult education by:
- Demonstrating exceptional commitment to adult education by participating in the Legislators Awareness Breakfast hosted by Stephenie Rittberger, program manager of Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) at the Career Learning Center of the Black Hills in western South Dakota, in early December 2025 while recovering from surgery. Although unable to attend in person, she joined via Zoom and remained fully engaged, following up afterward with thoughtful, well-informed questions that reflected her genuine interest in the needs of adult learners.
- Taking the time to connect with Stephenie Rittberger regarding GED® graduation ceremonies and Family Literacy Nights, showing her dedication to understanding and supporting programs that celebrate student achievement and strengthen families through education.
- Being instrumental in helping fellow South Dakota legislators recognize both the significant contributions adult learners make to the workforce and the substantial barriers to employment that many learners overcome in pursuit of education and career advancement.
Through her advocacy, engagement, and willingness to listen, Representative Uhre-Balk has become an important champion for adult education, helping raise awareness of the value these programs bring to individuals, families, communities, and employers across South Dakota.
Stephenie Rittberger, AEL Program Manager for the Career Learning Center of the Black Hills in Rapid City says, “Whether joining from afar, asking thoughtful questions, or championing the achievements of adult learners, Nicole reminds us that true advocacy begins with listening and grows through action.”
NAFTAE thanks Nicole Uhre-Balk for her commitment to ensuring that adult learners have the support they need to reach their goals.
