To assist drivers and attendees heading into downtown Rapid City, city officials have outlined specific street closures. The Sixth Street corridor from Omaha Street to Main Street will close starting Thursday, July 2 at 4 p.m. and will remain closed until Saturday, July 4 at 11:59 p.m. Additionally, Main Street from Fifth Street to Sixth Street will close on July 3 and July 4 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. each evening. Drivers should note that the intersection of Main Street and Sixth Street will remain open throughout the festivities. Parking enforcement will be active to clear vehicles from these areas before the closures take effect.
To support festival-goers and downtown businesses, Rapid City will offer free on-street parking from July 2 through July 4. The free parking zone spans from East Boulevard to West Boulevard, and from Omaha Street to Columbus Street.
During this three-day period, local businesses are permitted to set up small seating areas or merchandise displays on the sidewalks directly in front of their storefronts without needing a permit. However, businesses must maintain a minimum 5-foot wide clear zone along the sidewalk to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Downtown merchants are also encouraged to participate in the Visit Rapid City America 250 downtown decorating contest.
For those unable to find spaces in the immediate downtown area, overflow public parking will be available at The Monument lots located east of Fifth Street, across from the Minneluzahan Senior Center, the Club for Boys, and the Journey Museum. Accessible ADA parking is designated in the northeast corner of the downtown parking structure, as well as the bocce complex off Mount Rushmore Road and Omaha Street.
The City Hall parking lot will be closed on July 3 and July 4, with spaces reserved exclusively for public safety personnel and event volunteers. The City Hall lot will also host first aid and customer service tents. Meanwhile, Memorial Park will be outfitted with bleacher seating, portable restrooms, and picnic tables for public use.
Special traffic rules will apply for the Community Parade on July 2. The parade is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the intersection of East Boulevard and Main Street, moving down Main Street to Seventh Street, and looping back along Saint Joseph Street.
The staging area for parade entries will stretch from East St. Patrick Street to East Boulevard, and this section will be closed to all traffic starting at 4 p.m. on July 2. By 5 p.m., all traffic will be barred along the entire parade route, and a strict no-parking restriction will take effect within the downtown core, defined as Main Street from Fifth to Seventh streets, Seventh Street between Main and Saint Joseph streets, and Saint Joseph Street down to Fifth Street.
Law enforcement and event organizers anticipate heavy congestion throughout the downtown Rapid City area for the duration of the Birthday Bash. Officials are advising the public to plan travel routes in advance, exercise extra caution while driving, and allow additional time to reach holiday destinations.
The celebration kicks off in earnest on Thursday, July 2, with the 7 p.m. parade, followed by opening ceremonies at the Memorial Park Band Shell at 8:30 p.m. A patriotic drone show will launch from the west side of Memorial Park at approximately 9:30 p.m. On Independence Day, July 4, patriotic concerts will begin at 8 p.m., featuring headliner Chancey Williams on the Main Street Square stage and the Rapid City Municipal Band at the Memorial Park Band Shell.
