STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Ambulance Service provided the Sturgis Council with a financial update at their meeting Monday night.

The financial information provided by new Sturgis Ambulance Director Bryson Kool is through June because that is the most recent complete billing and payment information available.

Kool says during the first six months of the year, the ambulance service posted a cumulative ambulance billing base of $582,277.70. This equates to an average billing base of $97,046 per month for the first six months.

He says billing fluctuated throughout the period analyzed.

“So as you’ll see, this shows our income January through June of 2026 and once again, this kind of varies,” Kool told the council. “Medical billing is kind of a monster of itself., but you will see we do have a steady flow of income and a decent average. It’s averaging roughly between $91,000 and $104,000 and is normally about our monthly average. We’ve been working on analyzing 2025 since we switched to PCC. We’re still waiting to get a full year of data um from them.”

The peak month of billing was $107,303 in January. The month with the lowest amount of billing was $89,256 in June.

Payments reported for the first six months totaled $583,464 according to Kool. However, he says payments do not always match up with billing from month to month because the billing and collection of ambulance accounts do not always happen in the same month.

Kool also provided the council a rally recap.

“For 2026, we ran 156 calls during the rally, compared to 2025 where we ran 190, Kool said.

“We averaged 15.6 911 calls per day. Roughly about 18% decrease compared to 2025, which I think that was kind of standard across the board, whether it was Department of Revenue or the city or the ambulance. “Once we hit Wednesday or Thursday, we hit a pretty good plateau. Overall, the rally went really well. We brought in outside help this year. It’s the first year we’ve done that. We had six contractors come in and they did great.”

Kool says six months into the year, more than $582,000 in ambulance billing activity was posted and over $583,000 in payments were reported as of June.
