Martin, SD – Leo “Dean” Livermont, 69, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2026, surrounded by his three children.

Dean was born on November 15th, 1956 in Martin, South Dakota, to Wayne and Micki Livermont. He was raised on the family ranch north of Vetal, South Dakota with his four brothers and one sister. Dean grew up a cowboy where he developed a love for cattle and being a good horseman. He excelled in high school sports and graduated from Bennett County High School in 1975. He went on to play football at Chadron State College.

After college, Dean pursued his passion for ranching, working for the Shadbolt and Timmerman ranches, before returning back home to the family place in Vetal. He had an appreciation for raising and riding a good horse. Brandings and fellowship with family & neighbors became a cornerstone of Dean’s life. Some of his hobbies included local team ropings, men’s basketball in Cody, hunting, and fishing. He was involved with the Bennett County Fair Board, NRCS, and Vetal Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a South Dakota brand inspector for many years.

In his later years, being Grandpa Dean became one of the greatest joys of his life. He treasured every moment spent with his grandkids. Some of Grandpa Dean’s most special times were going for rides in the Ranger, taking the grandkids fishing, and always making sure there was ice cream in the freezer! He always encouraged “the clever way” of doing something and loved teaching his grandkids just about anything.

He had a way of making everyone feel welcome. Those who knew Dean appreciated his witty sense of humor and his big heart.

He is survived by his son, Nate (Shay); daughter, Rayel; son, Layne (Ami); grandchildren, Mayson, Hudson, Nova, Blair, Bryar, and Chancey; his four brothers; Larry, Steve, Tom, and Stu; and brother-in-law, Cam.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brady; sister, Tammy; and sister-in-law, Sherri.

Funeral Services will be at 2 pm on Monday, October 19th at the American Legion Auditorium in Martin, SD. Burial service will be at the Martin Community Cemetery.
