Plymouth, MN – Ruth Marie Camp, 84, formerly of Rapid City, died Saturday, October 3, 2026 at The Waters of Plymouth in Plymouth, Minnesota.
Ruth Camp (Carlson) grew up on a farm in Erwin, South Dakota. She was proud to be referred to as a farm girl. She enjoyed raising chickens and being active in 4-H where she even won a trip to Chicago exploring chicken breeding. She was an avid baker, and her homemade dinner rolls would likely have won a prize, but she was eliminated from the competition because she was told she was too young to compete.
Ruth was the first in her family to continue her education after high school. She chose to attend a business school where she achieved honors. Following graduation, she became employed as an administrative assistant. Unlike many women of her time, she did not want to become a nurse or teacher. She retired from her job when she married Richard (Dick) Camp.
Eventually, she and Dick became the proud parents of a daughter, Lisa. Ruth became a stay-at-home mom to enjoy raising their daughter. When Ruth decided to return to work, she found her dream job working at the elementary school where Lisa was a student. Ruth was the “do everything” employee. She was the nurse, school secretary, playground supervisor and occasionally a substitute teacher.
During the years of being a mom and a school employee, she took up hobbies including ceramics and cross stitch. She won purple ribbons at the fair for her projects.
Ruth had a passion for the world around her. She followed the news daily. Watching evening news was part of Dick and Ruth’s daily routine. However, it often became a contest between her and Dick over who could play the TV volume the loudest!
Ruth began her long goodbye when she began exhibiting memory loss. As the disease progressed, she moved to Plymouth, Minnesota to be near her daughter and to receive necessary care. Her final goodbye was on October 3, just shy of her 85th birthday.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Richard, in 2022, her parents, and her closest brother, John. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa, and grandsons, Carter and Jason.
Visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 am on Monday, October 19, 2026 at South Canyon Lutheran Church, 700 – 44th Street with the Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 am.
Burial Service will be held at 1:30 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
