RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Pennington County Treasurer’s Office has established an Aug. 31 deadline for residents holding temporary motor vehicle registrations issued following a recent countywide cybersecurity incident.
The deadline applies specifically to customers who received temporary paper registrations, either printed in-person at the Treasurer’s Office or emailed directly from the state, because system outages prevented normal transaction processing. It does not apply to temporary paper registrations issued through automobile dealerships or under standard operating conditions.
Vehicle purchasers remain bound by the standard requirement to transfer vehicle titles within 45 days from the date of purchase. Officials emphasized that the Aug. 31 deadline does not extend or replace the 45-day rule, and buyers who exceed that timeframe will face standard interest and financial penalties.
According to the Treasurer’s Office, staff resumed processing motor vehicle transactions on July 13 and began handling property tax payments on Aug. 12.
Residents planning a visit to the Treasurer’s Office in Rapid City should prepare for updated service operations. The office has temporarily replaced its previous digital queue system with a traditional first-come, first-served line, assisting customers strictly in the order of arrival.
The office operates Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. County officials strongly encourage customers to arrive at the building by or before 3 p.m. to allow sufficient time to move through the line before closing. Arriving by 3 p.m. does not guarantee service before 4 p.m., as wait times depend on crowd volume and transaction complexity, though staff will assist all customers who reach a service window by 4 p.m.
County officials advise impacted vehicle owners to complete their transactions early to avoid long line delays and potential penalties following the Aug. 31 deadline.
