RAPID CITY, SD – Rapid City’s Sustainability Committee was presented with the 2026 Sustainability Award to Goodwill of the Great Plains for their local and regional business model focusing on reuse, recycling and community impact.

Council President Stephen Tamang and Council members joined Sustainability Committee members at Monday’s Rapid City Council meeting in presenting the award to Briget Solomon, Chief Executive Officer of Goodwill of the Great Plains, who was accompanied by local and regional Goodwill officials.

The Sustainability Committee recognizes Goodwill for its work locally and regionally, diverting millions of pounds of materials from landfills each year, recycling items that cannot be sold. By promoting secondhand shopping, reducing waste and investing in sustainable infrastructure, Goodwill of the Great Plains continues to lead in environmental stewardship while creating jobs and strengthening communities.

“They work to make sure that as much as physically possible, products donated to their stores are recycled, reused or repurposed, and minimize the amount of material going to the landfill,” said Heidi Sieverding of the Sustainability Committee. “Goodwill of the Great Plains covers a large area and they strive to recycle electronics, paper, fabric and batteries and have many programs to help our community and its residents.”

Goodwill has also been a major participant with the annual Earth Day Expo in Rapid City.
