Dale Louis Orwick, age 72, passed away on August 14, 2026, in Winnemucca, NV, where he lived for most of his adult life.

Dale was born on December 9, 1953, to Richard and Ida Mae (Renelt) Orwick. He was raised on the family ranch northeast of Newell, SD and was the second of six children born to this union. He attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Newell High School and Black Hills State College.

As a young man, Dale enjoyed playing softball, riding motorcycles, bowling and playing pool. After college, Dale enjoyed traveling the country, and even spent some time on the road selling books! He held a variety of jobs in his younger years, working for American Colloid Company, area ranchers, in the oilfields, and for Worthen Van in Gillette, Wyoming.

During his time in Gillette, Dale met Sundae (Simons) Lowery and the two were married in 1989. With this union, Dale became a steadfast stepfather to Cody Shayne, Shannon, and Travis. Over the years, Dale and Shannon developed a particularly special bond and their relationship remained meaningful throughout his life. The family continued to grow through spouses, children, and grandchildren. Dale and Sundae divorced in 2024.

In 1989, Dale started what would become a long career in Nevada’s gold-mining industry. He worked at the same mine near Winnemucca for approximately 34 years. As a heavy-equipment operator, Dale found work that suited him and gave him plenty of opportunity to spend his days “playing in the dirt.” He lived a life marked by hard work, independence, family, and the freedom to follow his own path.

Dale was a devoted Catholic, and his faith remained an important part of his life. Family also remained important to Dale, and he enjoyed keeping in touch with his brother and sisters, nieces and nephews, children, grandchildren, and extended family.

Dale is lovingly remembered by his brother, Bob Orwick (Jennifer), residing on the family ranch northeast of Newell; sisters, Joan Luft, New Orleans, LA; Mary Burket (Jeff), Spearfish, SD; and Marcia Olson (Dan) of Spearfish, SD. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Ashley Selgeby (Kevin Crago), Will Orwick (Madison) and Sam Orwick (Bri); Erin Luft Katz (Alex) and Courtney Luft Buchholz; Alexis Burket and Logan Burket; Trevor Olson (Angela), Nick Olson, Ryan Olson and Zack Olson (Taylor).

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ida Mae Orwick; brother, Dick Orwick; and brother-in-law, John Luft.

A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Friday, October 9, 2026, at 10:30am at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newell, SD. Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Mud Butte Volunteer Fire Department.
