BROOKINGS, S.D. — More than 2,900 South Dakota FFA members gathered to “Step Up” on Day 1 of the 98th South Dakota State FFA Convention, which began Monday, April 20.
The first general session, sponsored by Raven, opened the convention with reflections from state officers, the presentation of colors by the SDSU Army ROTC and a welcome from South Dakota State University President Barry Dunn.
Key highlights from the session included recognition of the 2026 South Dakota FFA Family of the Year, the Jason and Jennifer Hofer family of Bridgewater, as well as the South Dakota FFA Foundation presentation highlighting the impact of donor and sponsor support. Star Partner recognition also honored businesses and organizations contributing to agricultural education across the state.
Members were recognized for their work in Agriscience Fair competitions and Agricultural Proficiency Awards, showcasing projects and supervised agricultural experiences developed throughout the year.
The session also featured retiring addresses from State Reporter Ireland McAreavey and State Secretary Kate Meyer, along with the introduction of candidates for the 2026-27 State FFA Officer Team.
Speaker Chris Scheufele delivered his keynote address, encouraging members to continue stepping up as leaders in agriculture and their communities.
In addition to general sessions, members participated in Career Development Events and leadership opportunities throughout the day, building skills for future agricultural careers.
The convention continues through April 22, with additional award announcements, sessions sponsored by organizations including US Army, South Dakota Army National Guard and South Dakota State University College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, and the election of the 2026-27 South Dakota FFA State Officer Team.
