CUSTER, S.D. – The morning update from the Qury Fire showed no change in the amount of containment, nor the amount of acreage burned – of which both remained at 27-percent and 8,434 respectively.

Fire officials say containment has held on the north and west side of the fire and crews are working on mop up and suppression repair. The east side of the fire received some wind through the night and created a few hot spots that crews were able to work. Burn out operations on the south side of the fire held overnight. Public and firefighter safety remain the highest priority as structure protection continues.

Operations Chief Mike Reed says high winds are expected late morning into the afternoon and that will limit firefighter’s ability to conduct firing operations and will test fire-lines.

Reed says crews will continue to work on strengthening fire lines today.

Returning residents are reminded that firefighters are still actively working on the ground.

Drive slowly and safely; expect to see smoke, heavy equipment, engines, and other firefighting vehicles working along and on the roadways.

Several closures remain in effect, including Lower French Creek Road from Highway 16A to Highway 87, Hazelrodt, Glen Erin, Flynn Creek, Herbert Draw, and Highway 87 from 16A to the north boundary of Wind Cave National Park.
