RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City residents should plan ahead for several closures and schedule changes as the city observes the Independence Day holiday on Friday, July 3. Because the Fourth of July falls on a Saturday this year, the federal holiday will be observed the day before.
City offices, including City Hall, will be closed Friday. Administrative offices at the Rapid City Police Department, Fire Department and Rapid City Regional Airport will also be closed, although police and fire personnel will remain on duty throughout the holiday. The airport will continue normal operations.
The Rapid City Landfill will be open Friday but closed Saturday, July 4. The Rapid City Public Library will also be closed Friday and Saturday.
Trash collection will follow a modified schedule during the holiday week. Monday collections will remain unchanged, while Tuesday through Friday collections will be picked up one day earlier than normal. Residents are encouraged to leave their trash carts out until collection is completed.
Rapid Transit Service, including RapidRide and Dial-A-Ride, will not operate Friday or Saturday. Regular service will resume Monday, July 6.
Administrative offices at The Monument will close Friday and remain closed through the weekend since no events are scheduled. Tickets for upcoming events will continue to be available online.
City swimming pools will remain open during the holiday, operating from noon to 6 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Independence Day. Roosevelt Park Ice Arena will be closed July 4 through July 19 for its annual maintenance.
The city’s annual fireworks display is scheduled for approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday from Executive Golf Course as part of the Real America 250 Birthday Bash, which runs July 1-5. The celebration will feature a community parade, patriotic drone show, downtown festival, Mount Rushmore fireworks viewing party, performances by Chancey Williams and Brandon Jones, a concert by the Air Force Academy Band, a Kids’ Zone, Touch-A-Truck exhibits, food vendors, historical reenactors, a Freedom 5K and other family-friendly activities.
