RAPID CITY, S.D. – More than 2,000 Rapid City Area Schools staff members gathered at The Monument Theatre on Friday, August 21, for a district-wide celebration to mark the start of the 2026-27 school year.

The morning event brought together educators, administrators, support staff, transportation workers, nutrition services, and facilities teams from across Rapid City. Attendees began the morning with a light breakfast before the official presentation at 8 a.m., which included a pep rally featuring the Cobbler cheerleaders, Stevens drumline, and Central High drumline.

Key speakers for the event included Rapid City Area Schools Teacher of the Year Katie Swank and Sara Hornick, executive director of the Public School Foundation.

District leaders emphasized the essential role that both certified teachers and support teams play in preparing for the local community’s students.

“Our teachers bring incredible energy, care, and expertise to their classrooms every day,” Dr. Thompson said. “They build relationships, inspire curiosity, and help every student see what is possible. We are grateful for their dedication and excited to welcome them back for another year of making a difference.”

Coy Sasse, who oversees RCAS Support Services, highlighted the preparations made by operational staff throughout the summer months to ensure facilities were ready.

“Our support services teams are behind so much of what makes a successful school day possible,” Sasse said. “From transportation and nutrition services to facilities and operations, our staff work hard to create safe, welcoming, and well-prepared schools. We are excited to come together as a district and begin another great year serving our students.”

The annual gathering takes place just days ahead of the district’s first official day of classes on Monday, August 24, when approximately 12,000 students across Rapid City will return to school buildings.
