RAPID CITY, S.D. — As the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally approaches, the Rapid City Disability Awareness and Accessibility Committee is reminding motorcyclists and all drivers to avoid parking in the white or yellow-striped access aisles next to accessible parking spaces, saying the areas are essential for people with disabilities to safely enter and exit vehicles.
The striped access aisles provide space for wheelchair ramps to extend from accessible vans and allow room for people using manual wheelchairs, walkers and crutches to maneuver safely. Committee Chairman Steve Massopust said the areas are not designated for motorcycle parking, even if they appear to be a convenient place to park. He said the spaces are designed specifically to meet accessibility needs and should remain clear at all times.
The committee has been using social media this week to educate residents and visitors about the proper use of the striped access areas ahead of the influx of motorcycle traffic during the rally. Massopust said the reminder is intended for both visitors and local residents, noting the striped areas are critical not only for wheelchair ramps but also for people who need additional space to use mobility devices or exit their vehicles safely.
Drivers who park cars or motorcycles in the white-striped access aisles adjacent to public accessible parking spaces can receive a $100 citation. In addition, parking in downtown areas marked with yellow curbs and striping carries a $25 citation. Many private businesses also use yellow striping to identify accessible parking areas and access aisles for people with disabilities.
