RAPID CITY, S.D. – Responding fire crews successfully contained and extinguished a grass fire started by juveniles using fireworks near the intersection of Catron Boulevard and Dan Christy Lane on Wednesday, July 1st.
Upon arrival, crews observed flames reaching one to two feet in height. The fire was spreading quickly due to dry conditions, but firefighters were able to get a strong hold on the blaze and prevent further spread beyond the initial area. In total, the fire reached approximately one quarter acre in size.
The incident serves as a reminder that fireworks can ignite fast-moving fires in dry conditions. Even a small ignition source can quickly become dangerous when vegetation is dry and winds are present. Officials urge the public to use extreme caution with fireworks where they are permitted and to consider the current fire danger before use.
“Independence Day should be a time for celebration, not tragedy,” said Fire Chief Jason Culberson. “We want everyone to enjoy the holiday safely and legally by taking fireworks seriously, supervising children closely, and making smart decisions that reduce the risk of injury or fire.”
“We ask that Rapid City residents be considerate of their neighbors, remain mindful of local laws regarding fireworks, and above all else, be safe this Fourth of July,” said Rapid City Chief of Police Don Hedrick. “We’re fortunate to live in an area that provides a variety of choices for community-sanctioned fireworks displays. These public displays offer a great option for those seeking to include fireworks in their Fourth of July Festivities.”
