RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City man was arrested on multiple charges Friday night stemming from overstaying closing time at Canyon Lake Park.
Paul Verhelst, 59, was arrested for DUI (6th offense), Possession of a Loaded Firearm While Intoxicated, No Proof of Insurance, and Trespassing in a Closed Park being transported to the Pennington County Jail.
According to the Rapid City Police Department, at around 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, police were conducting an extra patrol of Canyon Lake Park when they observed a pickup stop in a parking spot at the location (well past the 10 p.m. closing time for city parks). The officer made contact with the driver of the pickup and noted the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person, along with other indicators of alcohol impairment. Following a DUI investigation, Verhelst was determined to be too impaired to safely operate a motor vehicle and was placed under arrest for DUI. During a pre-tow inventory of the vehicle, police located several firearms, some of which were loaded.
